National Science Club Month 2017 theme – “EARTHBEAT”

September is just a few weeks away, and that means education institutions all over the country levels will very soon be celebrating the annual National Science Club Month (NSCM). The theme for NSCM 2017 is “EarthBeat: Excavating the Abyss, Pulsing the Current, Steering the Youth as Stewards of Sustainable Development.”

In its official Facebook page, the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC) explained that the theme aims to promote further understanding and appreciation of the planet Earth and the field of geoscience.  PSYSC is one of the organizations that plans the activities related to the annual celebration of science month.

“The Earth is advancing in different aspects. As we continue to progress, we realize the interconnectedness of all things that exist here within our home. One by one (and) action by action, we continue to surpass the milestones we have previously achieved. Earth is our only home, and we must nurture it and begin to understand its very heart of the Earth through geoscience,” the group elaborated.

In recent years, deadly natural calamities like powerful typhoons, earthquakes, landslides, and storm surges have forced Filipinos to pay more attention to issues and concepts related to geosciences. This is because it can help save countless of lives.

September as “Science Month” was institutionalized by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Proclamation 264, which she signed in 2002. Read the full text of Proclamation 264 (2002) in this link.

In the proclamation, Arroyo emphasized that the science clubbing movement and network is “a significant educational tool to encourage and inspire the youth and students to pursue careers in science and technology.”

Interested parties are encouraged to get in touch with PSYSC at 332-8151 or at nscm@psysc.org for questions regarding NSCM activities.
