ARAW NG DABAW – March 16 2017 declared a holiday in Davao City
Davao City will be celebrating its 80th foundation anniversary this coming March 16, Thursday. The day is a special non-working holiday throughout the city according to Republic Act (RA) 7551. The law, which was enacted in 1992 during the term of then-President Corazon Aquino, can be read in full in this link.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Stand tall. United. Resilient.” The past year had been a very eventful one for Davao City. It’s long-time Mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, was elected President of the Philippines last May. His daughter Sara Duterte returned as Mayor. And then, just a little two months after assuming office, the city was rocked by a terrorist attack in one of its popular night markets.
Davao City is often dubbed as the “crown jewel of Mindanao” because of its importance in the economy of the region. It was formally established in 1936 when Romualdo Quimpo, one of the region’s district representatives during the Commonwealth period, filed Bill Number 609 which created the City of Davao by merging the town of Davao (Mayo) and Guianga District.
Davao was inaugurated as a chartered city by President Manuel Quezon on October 16, 1936. The charter of Davao City is contained in Commonwealth Act #51.
