BAKIT APEKTADO KA? BAKIT HINDI! | A call against political apathy and indifference
I’m very disgusted with how people can just say “Move on!” and “Why are you too affected?” when people like me react negatively to news these past few days, particularly the Philippine Supreme Court’s decision to allow the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the National Heroes’ Cemetery and the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States.
Those kinds of remarks reflect extreme apathy and smugness. A lot of people seem to sorely lack the ability to look at the bigger picture, not just their personal privilege.
For example, I may have not lived through Marcos’ years in power to witness its horrors personally, but I know people who did! I have listened to their stories, and I take the lessons of history seriously.
As a graduate student of history, I have spent so much time reading about everything that happened during the Martial Law years (the murders, abductions, massive corruption, etc.), and that’s why I’m aghast at any attempt to revise history for the sake of boosting Bongbong’s chances for the presidency by 2022.
On another topic – I may not be an American citizen, but I know that Trump is a terrible man to become President of the United States because of his lack of platform, right temperament, and experience. Not to mention his blatant Islamophobia, racism, misoginy, and corrupt business practices.
Now, everytime you hear some people say that Filipinos will not be affected by Trump’s victory, please remind them of the millions of Pinoys living in the US – both legal and undocumented. And also, think about the economic, political, and military ties our two countries have.
And, lest it be forgotten, hundreds of thousands of Filipino families rely on breadwinners working in US-based business process outsourcing companies.
