#WalangPasok – Class suspensions for August 27 2016

Parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces including Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Pampanga, and Zambales have been experiencing occasional thunderstorms since Friday night, which caused intense traffic and flooding in certain areas. The weather disturbance is caused by the southwest monsoon or habagat, which is being enhanced by typhoon “Dindo” (international name “Lionrock”).
According to the 11:00 PM severe weather bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA, the eye of typhoon “Dindo” was located at 985 km east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes (23.2 °N, 131.0 °E).
It carries maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph. It is projected to move northeast at 7 kph. It is expected to be outside the Philippine area of responsibility or 1,520 km east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes by Sunday morning.
Because of this, some local government units and higher education institutions have announced class suspensions for today, August 27. This post will be updated as soon as new information becomes available.

The vast majority of students that come to school during Saturdays are from tertiary institutions, which perhaps explain why announcement on class suspensions from local government units are rather slow to come.
For its part, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has made it a policy not to issue classes suspensions. According the commission, such decisions are best left for local government units and the administrators of colleges and universities to decide.
In a post on its website, CHED also emphasized that college students are young adults “and should be treated differently from elementary and high school students” and that higher education needs to be delivered even under trying weather conditions.
