#GraceLeni | Groups push for Poe, Robredo tandem
Will the Philippines be soon led by two women? Why not!
Certain groups are now actively encouraging voters to practice split-ticket voting and select Senator Grace Poe for president and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo for vice president. Poe’s running-mate is Senator Francis Escudero while Robredo is the partner of former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
The groups have stepped up their efforts in recent days on social media and through other means of advertising. For example, there’s now a Facebook group called “Puso Natin, Laban Natin #GraceLeni.” In its manifesto, the group said that they are pushing for Poe and Robredo because they both have untarnished reputations and that they will have love compassion for Filipinos. It also praised the two women’s legislative track record.
Another Facebook group named “Para sa mga Kababaihan” is also pushing for a Poe-Robredo tandem as an alternative to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Bongbong Marcos, who are currently the front runners in the presidential and vice presidential race, respectively. The said groups and their allies are spending significantly in circulating Poe-Robredo posters and full-page newspaper ads.
If elected, Poe will be the country’s third woman president after Corazon Aquino who served from 1986 to 1992 and Gloria Arroyo 2001 to 2010. Meanwhile, Robredo will only be the country’s second woman vice president (Arroyo was VP from 1998 to 2001).
Curiously, the Philippines is not the only country that has a good shot of having a president and vice president that are both women. In the United States, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, is said to be considering a female running mate for the November elections.
