#AYAWsaDILAW | Poe rejects Roxas offer for an alliance vs Duterte
Senator Grace Poe has vehemently rejected a last-minute appeal from her rival, administration standard-bearer Mar Roxas, for them to discuss a possible alliance to thwart an imminent victory in the presidential race by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Speaking to reporters, Poe said she and Roxas have nothing else to talk about. “Anytime pwede namang mag-usap, pero sa puntong ito, ano pa ba ang pag-uusapan natin?” she said. She also dismissed the idea of her withdrawing from the presidential race to endorse Roxas instead. “Dapat may tiwala ako sa liderato ng taong susuportahan ko,” she stressed.
In a hastily-organized press conference in his Quezon City campaign headquarters, Roxas called for a dialogue between him and Poe. He claimed that having an alliance between them is the only way Philippine democracy can be saved from the threat of a Duterte presidency.
This is not the first time that Poe turned down Roxas’ overtures. From July to September last year, Roxas and the Liberal Party and even President Benigno Aquino III himself tried to persuade Poe to be Roxas’ running mate, but she decided to run for president instead.
Most netizens also do not seem to be in favor of Poe giving way to Roxas. The hash tag #AYAWsaDILAW is a top trending topic on the micro blogging site Twitter as of Friday night, with most users pointing out that it is illogical for the Senator to drop out of the race in favor of the former Interior Secretary given that she has higher poll numbers than in her in most surveys.
Others meanwhile argued that it is not likely for Poe to align herself with the party that sought to disqualify her in the first place and that if Roxas gives way to Poe and she wins, she will be forever indebted to him and his minions for her victory.
Hello, @MARoxas.
Bakit magback-out yung #2 in favor of #3? It's illogical.
You should have given way to Poe from the start.#AyawSaDILAW— Mark Pere Madrona (@FilipinoScribe) May 6, 2016
