Donald Trump, int’l media outlets weigh in on Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe 2015 faux pas

The controversy created by Steve Harvey’s faux pas during the announcement of the winner of Miss Universe 2015 shows no signs of slowing down, with various international news organizations and even Unitedonald States presidential candidate Donald Trump weighing in on the issue.

The saga began when Harvey, the event’s host, declared Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia as the winner of Miss Universe 2015, only to take back the announcement two minutes later in favor of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach. Trump, a real estate mogul and television personality who’s seeking the Republican Party presidential nomination, claimed that the mess-up would not have happened if he is still in charge of the Miss Universe Organization.

“Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant,” he wrote on his Twitter page. “I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!” He added during an interview on NBC Today Show that maybe, it would be better to simply make Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia as co-winners.

The Miss Universe Organization used to be run jointly by Trump and NBC Universal although the network abruptly ended the partnership last June when the former The Apprentice host made unfounded claims regarding Mexicans immigrating to the United States during his presidential bid announcement.

The controversy has also generated lengthy discussions among various news publications. For Nico Lang of Salon, Harvey should not have been asked to host the pageant in the first place because of his supposed history of sexism. He wrote:

The comedian and former sitcom star built his career as a self-help guru on disguising sexism as female empowerment. Harvey’s 2009 book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” spent an absurd number of weeks atop the bestseller list, announcing him as the man’s answer to Oprah Winfrey—a straight-talking self-help coach who says what everyone is thinking.

But Steve Harvey doesn’t want to help women as much as blame them for all of men’s shortcomings. Harvey’s ideas about relationships have a disturbing undercurrent of “boys will be boys” apologia, arguing that men are this way for a reason and women might as well deal with it.

Meanwhile, Tim Kenneally of The Wrap speculated that Harvey might have fumbled because he is too full of commitments (apart from hosting the game show Family Feud, he also has a weekday radio program). “Is it possible that Harvey was merely overextended, with too little time built into his packed schedule to prepare for the hosting gig?” the author wondered.

Lastly, Broderick Steven Harvey of the British tabloid The Mirror theorized that the entire sage might have been done on purpose by the organizers with the hopes of generating more buzz for the event.
