#WalangPasok – Class suspensions for December 15 2015 due to Typhoon Nona

Classes in several provinces in Luzon and Visayas are suspended for tomorrow, December 15, as Typhoon “Nona” (international name “Melor”) barrels through the Bicol region on its way to Mindoro provinces.

According to the severe weather bulletin issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) late Monday afternoon, “Nona” continues to have maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is moving westward at 17 kilometers per hour.

Based on the same report, the center of “Nona” is hovering over Bulusan, Sorsogon (12.7°N, 124.1°E). Earlier today, “Nona” made a landfall in Sorsogon. It is expected to be in the vicinity of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro tomorrow afternoon.

In connection to that, the weather bureau also raised storm signals in the following areas:

Signal #3 (121-170 kph Expected in 18 hrs/No classes in all levels)

LUZON: Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Southern Quezon, Marinduque and Romblon

VISAYAS: Northern Samar

Signal #2 (61-120kph Expected in 24 hrs/No classes up to high school)

LUZON: Batangas, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, rest of Quezon including Polillo Island, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island

VISAYAS: Eastern Samar, Samar and Biliran

Signal #1 (30-60kph Expected in 36 hrs/No classes up to kindergarten)

LUZON: Metro Manila, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, Southern Zambales, Southern Aurora and Coron

VISAYAS: Leyte, Northern Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Aklan, Capiz, Northern Antique, Northern Negros Occidental and Northern Iloilo

PRESCHOOL/KINDERGARTEN
Bataan
Quezon City

As stipulated in President Benigno Aquino III’s Executive Order 66, classes in all levels are suspended in areas under Signal #3. Meanwhile, classes up to high school are suspended in areas under signal #2. Lastly, classes in preschool and kindergarten are suspended for areas under signal #1.

Of course, local government leaders particularly the governors and mayors have the power to suspend classes in their respective constituencies as they see fit. It is likely that classes will be suspended in more areas once the 5:00 AM bulletin has been released.
