Eid’l Adha – September 25 2015 Philippine holiday
UPDATED, SEPTEMBER 15 2015
Muslims in the Philippines and around the world will be observing Eid’l Adha or their annual feast of sacrifice this coming September 25, Friday. That day is a regular national holiday as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 9849, which was signed in 2009 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The full text of RA 9849 can be read here.
President Benigno Aquino III made the announcement through Proclamation 1128, which was released this September 15. Click this link for the full text of the proclamation.
The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos had earlier recommended that the holiday be on September 24 but the Office of the President decided to move it forward by a day to create a three-day weekend.
Eid’l Adha, as the law describes, is significant because it is the tenth day in the month of Hajj or Islamic Pilgrimage to Mecca “wherein Muslims pay homage to Abraham’s supreme act of sacrifice and signifies mankind’s obedience to God.”
Eid’l Adha is one of the two Muslim holidays observed nationwide, along with Eid’l Fitr which was celebrated last July 17. The NCMF is the government agency tasked to determine the dates to which the holidays will fall based on Hijra or the Islamic calendar.
