Mary Jane Veloso gets reprieve from execution, for now
Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina sentenced to death in Indonesia after getting caught possessing 2.6 kilos of heroin last 2010, has been spared from the firing squad at the last minute.
According to The Jakarta Post, the Indonesian government made this decision after Maria Kristina Sergio, the woman who allegedly recruited her to act as a drug mule, surrendered to the Nueva Ecija Police Station on Tuesday. Veloso was scheduled to be executed midnight of April 29.
Indonesia’s attorney-general office (the equivalent of our Department of Justice) had previously rejected repeated appeals from the Philippine government to have the death sentence against her overturned. It is unclear yet if Veloso’s case will be retried or if her execution will eventually push through in the near future.
Meanwhile, the execution of eight other drug convicts, Indonesian Zainal Abidin, Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, Nigerians Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Raheem Agbaje Salami and Okwudili Oyatanze, Ghanaian Martin Anderson, went ahead despite the pleas of their respective governments and the United Nations.
Thanks God 😉
