Manny Pacquiao defeats Chris Aligieri via unanimous decision
Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao retains his WBO welterweight title by dominating American fighter Chris Aligieri en route to a unanimous in their fight Sunday night.
Two judges scored it 119-103 while another one scored it 120-102. The previously undefeated Aligieri looked every bit the underdog from the moment the bout started. He was knocked down six times in the fight’s first ten rounds.
As noted in a previous post, Pacquiao has not scored a knockout victory since mid-2009, and Aligieri denied him that opportunity by hanging tough despite getting decidedly outboxed. You can read a more detailed blow-by-blow account of the fight over there at BleacherReport.com.
These are figures as tabulated by Compubox:
Total punches landed: Pacquiao 229 of 669 vs. Algieri 108 of 469
Power punches: Pacman 187 of 410 vs. Algieri 80 of 212
So what’s next for the Pacman? Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports wrote on his Twitter page two days ago that a long-awaited fight between him and his archrival Floyd Mayweather Jr. can possibly happen next year.
In the mean time, he will have to return to the Philippines first to perform his duties as the head coach of the Kia Sorento basketball team. His squad will be facing the defending champion Purefoods Star Hotshots this Wednesday, November 26. :p
