The city used to be called “Tambobong” a reference to the “tambo” plants that are endemic to the area. During the Spanish period, it was under the administration of Augustinian Friars as its visita or parish together with its neighboring town of Navotas.
After the ouster of the Spaniards from the Philippines, Malabon became a municipality of the Rizal Province through Philippine Commission Act No. 137 (1900). It was later reunited with the town of Navotas through Philippine Commission Act No. 942.
By January 6, 1906, Malabon and Navotas were re-established as two distinct towns, and the set-up remained up to the present. malabon and Navotas, together with the cities of Caloocan and Valenzuela, are now collectively referred to as the “CaMaNaVa” area.
