Marquez beats Pacquiao via 6th round knock out
Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez dealt Filipino hero Manny Pacquiao the worst loss of his storied career – defeating the eight-time champion via knockout shortly before the sixth round of their fourth battle came to an end.
Pacquiao had the momentum in the first two rounds before being knocked down by Marquez in the third – the first time that the Mexican floored his Filipino arch rival. Marquez continued his dominance into the fourth round but Pacquiao managed to score a knockdown of his in the fifth round. Marquez finished the fight for good toward the dying seconds of the sixth round.
Suffering from two consecutive defeats, Pacquiao must now look ahead for his future. A megafight against Floyd Mayweather has now become more unlikely than ever but his promoter Bob Arum raised the possibility of having a fifth fight with Marquez.
As the 2013 midterm elections approaches, Pacquiao and his family is bound to be busy campaigning. Manny is seeking to retain his Saranggani congressional seat while his wife Jinkee is running to be the province’s vice governor. Meanwhile, his brother Rogelio is running to be the congressman of General Santos City. Pacquiao ran for this seat in 2007 but lost to then-incumbent Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who is now the city’s mayor.
President Benigno Aquino III released the following statement through Palace spokesperson Edwin Lacierda:
“Matapos po ang laban na ginanap sa Las Vegas, Nevada, nabigo po ang ating Pambansang Kamao na si Manny Pacquiao sa kanyang ika-apat na laban kay Juan Manuel Marquez.
Sa kabila ng kanyang pagkatalo, hindi po nito maisasantabi ang nakapakaraming karangalang naibigay na ni Manny sa sambayanang Pilipino. Muli, ipinakita niya nang buong loob ang kanyang dedikasyong makipaglaban sa ngalan ng ating mga kababayan at ng bandila.
Tinanggap po ni Manny ang kanyang pagkabigo nang buong pagpapakumbaba at dignidad, gaya ng ipinapamalas niyang katangian sa bawat pagkapanalo niya sa laban.
Wala pong magbabago: Nananatili ang paghanga at pagsuporta ng sambayanang Pilipino kay Manny. Nawa’y sama-sama po nating ipanalangin ang panunumbalik ng kanyang sigla’t lakas.”
PS: This picture from Instagram shows Jinkee wailing shortly after fight host Michael Buffer announced his husband’s defeat. Pacquiao should have just ran away from Marquez at the end of the 6th round like what Tim Bradley did last June. He would not have been knocked out. Prior to the fight stoppage, Pacquiao is said to be ahead in the judges’ scorecards, 47-46.
