#WalangPasok – Class, work suspensions for September 23 2024

(UPDATED, 12:20 AM)

Government employees nationwide will have a shortened work day on September 23, Monday, as the country celebrates the “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day.”

According to Memorandum Circular #64 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, work in government offices under the executive branch will be suspended starting 3:00 PM on Monday – or two hours earlier than the usual time-out for most state workers..

In the circular, Bersamin explained that the declaration seeks to “afford government workers and their families time to celebrate, in their respective homes, the Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day.” This means that classes in public schools in all levels across the country will be suspended starting 3PM of Monday.

In 1992, then-President Fidel Ramos signed Proclamation 60 which declared the last week of September every year as “Family Week.” For his part, then-President Benigno Aquino III signed 326 in 2012 which declared the last Monday of every September as “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day.” Since then, it has been an annual tradition in government offices to have a shortened work day on that day.

It must be emphasized that Malacañang’s announcement does not cover employees working in the legislative and judiciary branches of government as well as those working in local government units although it is likely that they will follow suit.

The Filipino Scribe will be updating this post if and when there are class suspension announcements from local government units.
