#JusticeForKillua trends as netizens condemn man who slaughtered a dog
A resident of Camarines Sur identified as Anthony Solares is facing possible legal charges after he mauled to death a golden retriever named Killua.
The incident has elicited an outpouring of outrage on social media after Vina Rachelle Arazas and Dimple Joanicent, the owners of the dog, posted photos of their dead pet through their respective Facebook pages late Sunday night.
They even have a video recording of Solares admitting that he killed the dog, presumably because he felt threatened by the golden retriever. In another video, Solares can be chasing the dog across the street for no apparent reason.
Aghast netizens had been tagging the social media accounts of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), urging the advocacy organization to help Killua’s family pursue charges against Solares.
Solares, who has already deactivated his Facebook account, can be held liable for violating Repuclic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act. Section 6 of the said law criminalizes the torture and killing of any animal. If convicted, Solares can be imprisoned from six months to up to two years.
Animal rights groups like PAWS and the Compassion and Responsibility for Animals or CARA have been calling on the Philippine legislature to pass tougher regulations against animal cruelty in recent years, although it has been unsuccessful so far.
