CHALK ALLOWANCE: DepEd teachers to receive P5000 as SY 2023-2024 starts
Public school teachers will be receiving the so-called “chalk allowance” worth P5,000 with school year (SY) 2023-2024 set to begin by August 29. This is stipulated in a memorandum issued by Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary for Finance Annalyn Sevilla dated 4 August 2023.
In the memorandum, Sevilla mentioned that all classroom teachers will be receiving P5,000 each “for the purchase of teaching supplies and materials, for internet subscription and other communication expenses, and for an annual medical examination expense.”
It was also stipulated in the document that the amount must be received by public school teachers not earlier than August 29, the official start of the next school year. Those who have been hired during SY 2022-2023 are entitled to get the P5,000 in full. Meanwhile, newly-hired teachers who were able to have their first day of service during the first 30 days of SY 2023-2024 should also receive the entirety of the chalk allowance.
Meanwhile, those who will be hired after the first 30 days but not beyond than 90 days will be getting 80% of the cash allowance, or P4,000. Those who will be hired after the school year’s first 90 days but not beyond the first 150 days will get 50% or P2,500. Lastly, those who will be hired after the first 150 days and toward the end of the school year are entitled to get 20% of the cash allowance, or P1,000.
