#WalangPasok – July 30 2022 declared holiday in selected Mindanao provinces for Islamic New Year
Muslims all around the world will be celebrating Amun Jadid or the Islamic New Year this July 30, Saturday. Amun Jadid marks the first day of the first lunar month of Muharram (Muharram 1, 1444) based on the Hijri or the Muslim lunar calendar.
The day is expected to be declared a legal holiday in several provinces in Mindanao by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF). The Filipino Scribe will be updating this post once new information becomes available.
Major publications in predominantly Muslim countries have already identified July 30, 2022 as the date of the Islamic New Year including The Daily Pakistan, The Khaleej Times of United Arab Emirates, and The Saudi Gazette.
Amun Jadid is one of the five Muslim holidays observed in the Philippines as listed in Article 169 of Presidential Decree 1083, which was signed in 1977 by then-President Ferdinand Marcos. You can read the full text of the proclamation, which is more formally known as the Code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines, here.
The Islamic New Year or Amun Jadid will be a holiday in the following areas in Mindanao:
Provinces
1) Basilan
2) Lanao del Norte
3) Lanao del Sur
4) Maguindanao
5) North Cotabato
6) Sultan Kudarat
7) Sulu

10) Zamboanga del Sur
Cities
1) Cotabato City

Article 172 of PD 1083 also states that all Muslim government officials and employees working anywhere in the Philippines are excused from reporting for work so they can observe the Islamic new year holiday.
