September 2 2024 declared holiday in Albay for Simeon Ola Day

The country will be commemorating the 159th birth anniversary of the late hero Simeon Ola this September 2. This is a special non-working holiday in Albay, Ola’s home province, as stipulated in Republic Act 11136 which was signed into law in 2018 by then-President Rodrigo Duterte.

This holiday will give those working and studying in Albay a three-day weekend because it falls on a Monday this year. According to RA 11136, Ola’s life, service, and bravery needs recognition because he is the last Filipino army general who surrendered to the American forces during the Philippine-American war.

Pay Rules For Simeon Ola Day – September 2, 2024

As mentioned in the 2023_edition of Department and Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like the Simeon Ola Day 2024.

This means that workers who are not required or permitted to work on September 2 in Albay are not due to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
