#WalangPasok – August 30 2024 declared holiday in San Juan City

The Philippines will be commemorating the 128th anniversary of the Battle of San Juan del Monte this 30 August 2024, Friday.

The day has been declared as a special non-working holiday in San Juan City as mandated by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s Proclamation 649. The holiday will give those working and studying in San Juan City a three-day weekend because the holiday falls on a Friday.

More popularly known as the “Battle of Pinaglabanan,” this is considered as the first major battle launched by the Katipuneros during the early days of the 1896 revolution against the Spaniards.

The Katipunan under the leadership of Andres Bonifacio chose to attack the Spaniards in San Juan del Monte because two strategically-important places were located there at that time: the El Polvorin gun powder depot and the El Deposito water reservoir.

As a remembrance to the battle, the five-hectare wide Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine was built which features the “Spirit of Pinaglabanan” monument. There is also the Museo El Deposito and the Museum of Katipunan. All these are located near the San Juan City Hall.

Pay Rules For Pinaglabanan Day Holiday – August 30, 2023

According to the 2023_edition of Department and Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like the anniversary of the Battle of Pinaglabanan in San Juan City this August 30.

In line with this, workers who are not required or permitted to work on August 30 in San Juan City are not entitled to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days must receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
