National History Month theme 2024: “Salaysay ng Bayan, Saysay ng Bansa”
The Philippines celebrates the annual National History Month or “Buwan ng Kasaysayan” every month of August.
The official theme for the commemoration of National History Month 2024 celebration is “Salaysay ng Bayan, Saysay ng Bansa” (“Stories of the People, Essence of the Nation”) according to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines or NHCP. In a statement posted on its social media platforms, the agency said that this year’s theme gives emphasis on local history as an important component in creating our national history.
“Kapag inilagay natin ang ating mga sarili sa konteksto ng ating mga pook na tinitirhan, pinag-aaralan, o pinagtatrabahuhan, lalo tayong napapalapit sa ating nakaraan at sa mga aral na nais nitong ituro sa atin” (“If we place ourselves in the context of the place where we lived, studied, and worked, we put ourselves closer to the past and the lessons it seeks to impart”), the agency explained, adding that it together with its partner agencies has prepared various activities to encourage people to know their respective local histories.
Interested parties are invited to regularly check the agency’s official social media platforms for the official logo and posters as well as the line-up of activities.
August has been designated as National History Month through the late former President Benigno Aquino III’s Proclamation 339, which was signed in 2012. Prior to 2012, there was only a History Week, which ran from September 15 to 21 as stipulated in former President Ferdinand Marcos’ Proclamation 1304, signed in 1974.
