#WalangPasok – August 19 2024 declared holiday in Quezon City, Aurora, and Quezon

The Philippines will be commemorating the 146th birth anniversary of the late former President Manuel Luis Quezon this August 19.

The day is a special non-working holiday in the provinces of Aurora and Quezon as well as in Quezon City according to Republic Act 6741. The holiday will give those working and studing in those areas a three-day weekend since it falls on a Monday this 2024.

Manuel Quezon Day is a working holiday in the rest of the Philippines. RA 6741 was enacted in 1989, during the term of then-President Corazon Aquino.

Quezon is regarded as the “Father of the National Language” (“Ama ng Wikang Pambansa“) because of it was during his administration when Tagalog was selected to be the basis of the national language over the other local languages in the country.

Pay Rules For Quezon City Day  – August 19, 2024

As mentioned in the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like the Quezon City Day.

This means that workers who are not required or permitted to work on August 19 in Quezon City as well as in the provinces of Aurora and Quezon are not due to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
