August 16 2024 declared holiday in Davao City for ‘Kadayawan Festival’

Residents of Davao City will be celebrating their 39th annual Kadayawan Festival this August 16, Friday.

The day has been declared as a special non-working holiday in Davao City through President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s Proclamation 621. Since August 18 falls on a Friday, most Davaoeños will get to enjoy a three-day weekend. The city will also commemorate it’s Indigenous People’s Day by then.

According to a report posted by the Philippine Information Agency, the present-day Kadayawan Festival was first celebrated in 1986 as Apo Duwaling Festival. The name represents the city’s three icons: Mt Apo, Durian, and the Waling-Waling orchid.  It was renamed in 1988 during the term of then-Davao City Mayor and future President Rodrigo Duterte.

Pay Rules For Kadayawan Festival holiday – August 16, 2024

As mentioned in the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like the Kadayawan Festival.

This means that workers who are not required or permitted to work on August 16 in Davao City are not due to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.
