CHALK ALLOWANCE: DepEd teachers to receive P5000 as SY 2024-2025 begins

Public school teachers will be receiving the so-called “chalk allowance” worth P5,000 with school year (SY) 2024-2025 set to begin by July 29. This was confirmed by newly-appointed Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara to media organizations.

According to the General Appropriations Act of 2024, this amount aims to help public school teachers in their “expenses for teaching supplies and materials, for internet subscription and other communication expenses, and for an annual medical examination.”

The Department of Education (DepEd) is yet to release its official guidelines for the grant of the chalk allowance, though it is not expected to be different from previous school years. For instance, those who have been hired during SY 2023-2024 are likely to get the P5,000 in full. Meanwhile, newly-hired teachers who were able to have their first day of service during the first 30 days of SY 2024-2025 should also receive the entirety of the chalk allowance.

Meanwhile, those who will be hired after the first 30 days but not beyond than 90 days will be getting 80% of the cash allowance, or P4,000. Those who will be hired after the school year’s first 90 days but not beyond the first 150 days will get 50% or P2,500. Lastly, those who will be hired after the first 150 days and toward the end of the school year are entitled to get 20% of the cash allowance, or P1,000.
