#WalangPasok – January 17 2024 declared holiday in Olongapo, Subic
Olongapo City in Zambales will be commemorating the 107th anniversary of James L. Gordon, who served as its mayor from 1964 to 1967, this coming January 17. He is the late father of former Senator Richard Gordon.
The day has been declared a special nonworking holiday in Olongapo City as well as in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone through Republic Act 11217 which then-President Rodrigo Duterte signed back in 2019. The law commends Gordon for his “achievements, contributions, and heroism.” The holiday this year falls on a Wednesday.
Pay Rules For James Gordon Day – 17 January 2024
According to the 2023_edition of Department and Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays.
In line with this, workers who are not required or permitted to work on January 17, 2024 in Olongapo City and in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone are not entitled to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.
The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days must receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
