#WalangPasok – October 30 2023 declared a national holiday
(LAST UPDATE: 11 OCTOBER 2023)
Almost 92 million Filipinos are qualified to vote for the coming October 30, 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.
In line with this, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has declared Election Day 2023 as a special non-working holiday all over the Philippines to maximize voter turnout. Marcos made the announcement through Proclamation 359 which was released this October 11, Wednesday.
TFS has previously reported that Presidents typically declare election day as a non-working day. Last year, then-President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation 1357 which designated 9 May 2022 as a special non-working holiday to “enable the Filipino people to properly exercise their right to vote.” Duterte also declared 14 May 2018, the date of the most Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, as a special non-working day.
Not declaring election day as a holiday may seriously lower voters’ turnout since the Philippines currently does not allow early voting unlike in the United States.
