LONG WEEKEND – June 12 2023 declared a national holiday
Filipinos will be marking the country’s 125th Independence Day (“Araw ng Kalayaan“) this coming June 12. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Kalayaan 2023: Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan.”
The day is a regular holiday as stipulated in President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s Proclamation 42, which he signed August of last year. Since this year’s Independence Day falls on a Monday, it will pave the way for a three-day weekend for most Pinoys.
Since June 12 falls on a Monday, it is expected that employees in certain sectors especially the business process outsourcing industry will be required to report for work.
Pay Rules For Independence Day holiday – June 12, 2023
As mentioned in the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, employees covered by the holiday pay rule are entitled to receive 100% of their regular daily wage rate even if they do not report for work on regular holidays like Independence Day. This daily wage rate is the sum of a worker’s daily basic wage and cost of living allowance.
Meanwhile, those who will report for work on Independence Day are entitled to get at least twice or 200% of their daily wage rate, which is more commonly referred to as “double pay.”
