Is Marcoleta betting on having a cabinet post under a President Marcos?
Congressman Rodante Marcoleta of SAGIP party-list has withdrawn his candidacy for senator this Wednesday night, citing his low ratings in surveys. His name will stay in the ballot, but votes for him won’t be counted anymore.
Marcoleta is best-remembered for leading the effort in the House of Representatives to block ABS-CBN’s bid to have a new broadcast franchise back in 2020. He frequently touts this role during campaign sorties.
His decision to withdraw his senatorial bid twelve days before election day might actually be a shrewd move on his part. Come to think of it, he has nothing to lose even if he continues his losing bid. He can just stop campaigning so he won’t be spending anymore.
One possible scenario is that Marcoleta is expecting former Senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to be elected as the next President. A member of the powerful sect Iglesia ni Cristo, he is part of Marcos’ “Uniteam” senatorial ticket.
