Teachers group slams DepEd for delay in release of performance-based bonus
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers or ACT strongly condemned the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Budget and Management for the long delay in the release of performance-based bonus (PBB) for public school teachers.
In a joint statement ACT Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro noted that employees of other government agencies have long received their respective PBBs. “Ito ay kapabayaan at pagsasawalang bahala sa kalagayan ng mga guro at kawani ng DepEd na dapat hindi maantala ang mga benepisyong ito (This delay is due to the negligence and indifference of DepEd higher-ups),” the two said.
The two legislators added that it would be ideal for the PBB to be released by December 29 so that DepEd teachers and non-teaching employees can have extra money heading to the New Year. December 29 is the last work day for 2017. The first work day of 2018 is January 2 for private sector employees and January 3 for government workers.
As of December 28, several DepEd regional offices have told ACT that teachers and non-teaching employees in their respective areas will have to wait until the first quarter of 2018 before they can receive their PBB. This includes the National Capital Region as well as Regions 1, 3, 4a, 5, 7, 9, 12. and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Tinio and Castro nevertheless reiterated their opposition to PBB in principle, especially as regards the new guidelines for its implementation which resulted in lower incentives for the vast majority of government employees.
