Teatro Tomasino presents Bob Ong’s ‘Kapitan Sino’
Teatro Tomasino, the official theater group of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), will have as their last offering for 39th theatrical season a stage adaptation of Bob Ong’s popular 2009 novel “Kapitan Sino.”
The stage play will feature the tandem of playwright Cyrene Mendoza and director Franny Omampo, former Teatro Tomasino artistic director and advertising practitioner. Stand up comedian and television host John Lapus will be one of the lead characters in the play.
“Kapitan Sino” tells the story of Rogelio Manglicmot, an ordinary provincial guy who works as an electronics technician. One day, he was transformed into a superhero after discovering his secret powers. He uses his powers to help his town-mates who are in need, even though he opts at first to keep his identity a mystery – hence the monicker “Kapitan Sino.”
“More than a battle of good vs. evil, “Kapitan Sino“ examines Rogelio’s response to heroism at the expense of his happiness and family, the consequence of people’s overdependence on a hero, and their inherent nature of being abusive and selfish,” Teatro Tomasino explained in a press release.
The group added that the play will somehow reflect the current socio-political climate of the country, particularly through its core lessons on pseudo heroes, sacrifices, and change-seeking people. What makes the play extra special is the participation of former Teatro Tomasino members.
“Kapitan Sino” will be shown at the UST’s Albertus Magnus Auditorium from May 3 to 6, 2017 on these times:
May 3 – 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm
May 4 – 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm
May 5 – 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm
May 6 – 7pm
