Dulaang UP presents ‘Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan’
Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (Dulaang UP) once more pays homage to the great English playwright William Shakespeare as it kicks off its 41st season this month with “Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan,” Guelan Varela-Luarca’s Filipino translation of “The Comedy of Errors.” The production can also be considered a contribution of the theater group to the worldwide commemoration of Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary this 2016.
In a press statement, Dulaang UP explained that the play seeks to merge the glorious past and the present-day era into a narrative of mistaken identities, loves lost and found, and families gone astray and made whole again.
“The play revolves around a father named Egeon who is in search of his identical twin sons who were separated from him in a shipwreck that happened a long time ago. He visits the city of Ephesus for this search without knowing that one of his missing sons, Antipholus of Syracuse is also visiting the city. His other son, Antipholus of Ephesus is a prominent citizen in Ephesus, and the presence of his two identical twin sons in the city leads to confusion, and yes, a comedy of errors. Characters are mistaken for one another without disguises or the intent for pretensions which leads to chaos and confusion but ultimately ends with revelations, forgiveness, and felicity,” the theater group explained.
“Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan” will be directed by Alexander Cortez, who’ve previously handled other Shakespearean plays including Macbeth and Richard III. The artistic team will be comprised of the following individuals: Judy Ick for dramaturgy, Gino Gonzales for costume design, Ohm David for set design, Meliton Roxas Jr. for technical direction and lighting design, Jethro Joaquin for sound supervision, Arvy Dimaculangan for sound design, PJ Rebullida on choreography, Winter David on video design, Jojit Lorenzo for photography, Jean Edfhel Pascual (dramaturgy – assistant), and Pow Santillan as art director for photography and poster design.
“Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan” will have its theatrical run from August 24 to September 11, 2016 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City.
