#WalangPasok – August 29 2016 declared a national holiday
The country will be having the annual celebration of National Heroes Day or Araw ng mga Bayani this August 29, Monday.
The day is a regular holiday all over the Philippines as indicated in President Benigno Aquino III’s Proclamation 1105, which listed all the regular and special holidays for this year. Read more about Proclamation 1105 through this post from August 2015. This holiday will effectively give most students and employees a three-day weekend.
Having an annual National Heroes Day was first mandated by Commonwealth Act. 3827 of 1931. According to the act, it needs to be celebrated every last Sunday of August. That practice went on until 2007.
That’s when then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Republic Act 9492 which moved the celebration of the Araw ng mga Bayani to the last Monday of August in line with her so-called “holiday economics” program.
The last week of August is momentous in Philippine history because it is during this time in 1896 that Andres Bonifacio and members of the Katipunan launched an armed revolution against the ruling Spanish colonizers. It took nearly two years before the Spaniards were finally ousted although Filipinos’ victory ultimately proved to be short-lived because of the arrival of American imperialists.
