June 24 2016 declared a holiday in Manila
The city of Manila, the Philippines’ capital city, will be celebrating its 445th foundation anniversary (locally referred to as Araw ng Maynila) this June 24.
The day, which this year falls on a Friday, has been declared a special non-working holiday by outgoing President Benigno Aquino III through Proclamation 1289. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the country’s first Spanish governor-general, declared Manila as the capital city of the country in June 24, 1571. He also famously described Manila as a “distinguished and ever loyal city” or Ciudad Insigne y Siempre Leal.
