BUWAN NG PAGBASA – National Reading Month 2015 official theme
Primary and secondary educational institutions all over the Philippines will be observing the annual National Reading Month this November. The celebration, which is specifically mentioned in the Department of Education’s calendar for school year 2015-2016, is typically organized by the schools’ respective English Departments.
As noted by The Filipino Scribe last year, November was officially designated as the National Reading Month by Education Secretary Armin Luistro through Memorandum #244 which he signed last 2011.
In connection to that, November 27 of each year has been declared as “Araw ng Pagbasa” (National Reading Day) through Republic Act 10556. This is in honor of the father of President Benigno Aquino III, the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., whose birth date is November 27, 1932. Read the full text of RA 10556 here.
So far, DepEd is yet to release a memorandum outlining its suggested activities for National Reading Month 2015 as well as the theme for this year (last year, it was released October 23). This post will be updated if and when the department releases that.
Nevertheless, it must be emphasized that the activities required last year are very likely to be used again this 2015:
- Mystery Reader –
- Share a book, Win a friend –
- Storybook Challenge –
- Local Storytellers –
- A Story of Hope –
- Reading Academy for Teachers –
- Reading Camp –
- Araw ng Pagbasa –
- I Caught You Reading
- Nasa Pagbasa Ang Pagbasa
Apart from that, schools can also organize competitions related to the National Reading Month including essay writing, poster and slogan making, creative story telling, as well as reading proficiency and spelling quiz bees.
It must be noted that November is also the Philippine Book Development Month as stipulated in Proclamation 1436 s. 2007, which was signed by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
