February 3 2014 holiday in Bulacan – Blas Ople day

The province of Bulacan will be marking the 88th birth anniversary of one its favorite sons, the late Senator Blas F. Ople, this February 3.

The day, which this year falls on Monday, is a special non-working holiday in the said province in Central Luzon by virtue of Proclamation 709, which President Benigno Aquino signed last January 16.

In the declaration, Aquino noted that Ople “devoted decades of his life to selfless, dedicated, and sincere service” to the country and for Filipinos.

Take note though that the Palace is yet to upload the text of this proclamation on their website. Blas Ople Day is one of the legal holidays in Bulacan as listed in their Provincial Administrative Code (click the link to read the document).

Dulaang UP presents ‘Ang Nawalang Kapatid’ by Floy Quintos

Dulaang UP (DUP), the official performing group for theater of the University of the Philippines, will close its 38th theatrical season this coming February with Ang Nawalang Kapatid (ANK), a musical based on The Mahabharata, an Indian epic considered to be the longest poem in the world.

The Mahabharata tells the story of Karna, a brave young man who must choose between loyalty to his family or to the state which made him a prince. A key subplot here is the fierce competition between the Kaurava and Pandava families.

Ang Nawalang Kapatid is developed by acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos, with original score by Ceejay Javier. Javier’s previous works include “Isang Panaginip na Fili,” “Astig,” “Alex in Wonderland,” and “Break Away Antigone.” It will be directed and choreographed by Dexter M. Santos (“Maxie the Musical,” “Collection,” “Orosman at Zafira”).

Dulaang UP will present ‘Ang Nawalang Anak’ from February 5 to 23, 2014

“’Ang Nawalang Kapatid’ was originally written as a children’s play for the Ateneo Children’s Theater and was first produced for their 2011 season. This new version allows for many more of the complexities of the original material to be dramatized,” Dulaang UP said in a statement.

Quintos’s adaptation, the group added, will highlight the theme of family and blood ties as well as the conflicts that these bring about. Karna, originally portrayed in Indian literature as an anti-hero, will now be seen as a young man searching for his dharma, his truth and destiny, while unaware of his true blood ties.

With ANK, Dulaang UP seeks to bring the timeless story of The Mahabharata to a more diverse audience.  It will also underscore how the said epic mirrored strong values like loyalty to family, a trait particularly associated with Filipinos and other Southeast Asians.

Initiated by multi-awarded actor and director Antonio Mabesa in 1976, DUP’s objective is to “stage original and translated versions of classics by master playwrights as well as mounting powerful and incisive masterworks by professional and promising Filipino playwrights.”

Ang Nawalang Kapatid will run from February 5 to 23, 2014. All performances will be at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theatre in University of the Philippines-Diliman (Palma Hall, 2nd floor).

PS: Dulaang UP began its current season with ‘Adarna,’ which ran last July.

Deniece Milinette Cornejo and Cedric Lee

Not Denise Millet Cornejo

Two top entertainment blog sites have identified Cedric Lee and Deniece Millet Cornejo as the alleged mastermind of the physical attack and extortion attempt against television personality Vhong Navarro. EnterVRexWorld posted a composite picture of the two individuals in a blog post.

Website LionHearTV meanwhile noted that web inquiries for Cedric Lee is already spiking.

Here’s a scanned image of a magazine article about Cornejo. She is using this as a cover photo on her Facebook account. As of this time, the account is still active. (UPDATE: The page has already been deactivated.)

Question: Is this Cedric Lee also the former husband of Vina Morales?

Vhong Navarro denies rape allegations

Television personality Vhong Navarro strongly denied allegations that he tried to rape a 22 year-old female student. Speaking to Buzz ng Bayan‘s Boy Abunda from his hospital bed, Navarro insisted that his assailants tried to extort two million pesos from him.

In his first interview since news of the assault against him became public Friday night, Navarro repeatedly expressed fear for his and his family’s safety. “Binaboy nila ako, tinakot nila ako. Papatayin daw nila ako, mga anak ko, mga magulang ko,” he told Abunda.

He said he is breaking his silence to seek justice against those who attacked him. “Nagsasalita ako dahil pwedeng maulit ito. Kung nagawa nila ito sa akin, pwede nila itong gawin sa mga maliliit na tao,” the comedian said.

In an earlier statement, Navarro’s manager Chito Rono said that the comedian visited a female friend in a condominium unit at The Fort, Taguig City on Wednesday night. The woman, who Navarro only identified as “Denise,” claimed in a blotter report that the the comedian tried to rape her and that her friends attacked him upon witnessing the alleged crime. GMA News uncovered this angle Saturday night.

Navarro claimed that he has known “Denise” for two years already although they only met last January 17. He did not clarify though how they met. One thing he admitted is that he became physically intimate with her, short of having sex. “Nagpakita siya ng motibo sa akin. May nangyari sa amin, but there’s no sexual intercourse,” he said.

He said they agreed to meet again late evening of January 22. Instead of waiting for her at the lobby of the condominium, Navarro went straight to Denise’s unit. The girl then told her: ‘Binigla mo ako. Hindi pa ako nakakapaglinis.’ After she walked out of the room, a guy Navarro identified as Cedric Lee poked a gun on him. Five other guys eventually appeared side-by-side with ‘Cedric.’

CCTV footage of attack on Vhong Navarro?

Vhong Navarro attacked inside a condo unit in The Fort

Comedian and television host Vhong Navarro is currently in critical condition after being “tied up and attacked by a group of men” inside a condominium unit in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig on Wednesday night, ABS-CBN News reported, quoting director Chito Rono, his manager.

Rono claims that Navarro is still not able to fully recount what really transpired during that fateful night since he cannot speak properly yet. Because of the incident, Navarro might have to undergo an operation. The comedian will not be seen in “Showtime” and his other television projects as he moves toward full recovery.

Pinoy netizens have expressed their support for Navarro by making the hashtag #PrayForVhongNavarro the top trending topic in the Philippines as of Saturday midnight. Meanwhile, here’s the full text of Rono’s statement:

Si Vhong Navarro ay naimbitihan sa isang condominium unit sa Fort ng isang kaibigang babae. At sa di pa malamang kadahilanan, siya ay piniringan, pinagtulungang bugbugin, ginapos, tinakot, at hinihingan ng pera ng isang grupo ng kalalakihan noong January 22, Miyerkules.

“Si Vhong ay kasalukuyang nagpapagaling at mawawala ng pansamantala sa ‘It’s Showtime’ at iba pa niyang proyekto.”

NBI clearance application goes online

Those days when Filipinos have to take a day off from work just to secure a clearance issued by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will very soon be over.

In a statement, Department of Justice secretary Leila De Lima said that NBI clearance applications can now be made through the agency’s website beginning January 24, Friday.  Applicants only have to fill out an online application form  at or at to accomplish this step.

Applicants will then have to bring the print-out to any of NBI’s 55 satellite offices  for payment and biometric enrollment prior to the releasing of the actual clearance certificate.

Early this month, De Lima announced the completion of an improved search engine and query database, a step which she explained will hasten the accurate releasing of clearances. “With the implementation of the NBI system, we shall continue to roll-out and implement solutions to progressively eliminate queues and simplify processes,” she said, adding that “online application is the logical next step after the switch.”

In the same news release, newly appointed NBI Director Virgilio L. Mendez  reiterated that the system is only on its third full week of operation and that significant progress can be expected in the coming weeks with the delivery of additional equipment and increase in personnel.

The online NBI Clearance System is part of the flagship National Justice Information System (NJIS) which aims to link and share information among justice sector institutions.

QUICK NOTES: I was already able to fill out the form through the NBI website. However, I had to click the “submit” button repeatedly since I’m getting an error message. As Director Mendez said, website glitches are to be expected. I just hope it won’t be as horrendous as the previous version of the Obamacare website in the United States. LOL

After you’ve done providing all the needed personal information, the accomplished form will then appear on the screen. There is no way for a user to save the document in any format (PDF, Word, etc.) except by copying-and-pasting. Because of this, the proper page layout cannot be retained. This is one area I hope they can work on soon.

Also, it is not clear how NBI will entertain walk-in clearance applicants beginning on Friday. Will there be a separate lane for them? I am raising this concern in recognizance of the fact that a majority of Filipinos still do not have access to the internet.

(I plan to finish my clearance renewal at the NBI satellite office in Ever Commonwealth early next week. Let’s see how this development improves things. 🙂 )
