Iglesia ni Cristo 99th anniversary – July 27 2013

Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), a religious congregation with a membership of about two million, will celebrate its 99th foundation anniversary this July 27. The day, which this year falls on a Saturday, is a special working holiday nationwide as stipulated in Republic Act (RA) 9645.

RA 9645 was enacted in 2009 during the term of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The law commends the exemplary feat of the INC hierarchy “in leading its members towards spiritual enlightenment and good citizenry.” Read the full version of RA 9645 in this website.

As noted in a previous post, that particular law is silent on whether employers are required to give workers who are members of the INC a day off come July 27. According to the Labor Department’s Handbook on Workers’ Statutory Monetary Benefits (2012 edition), no premium pay is required for those who work on special working holidays since “work performed on said days is considered work on ordinary working days.”
