September 9 2012 Osmena Day Holiday in Cebu

Cebuanos will mark the 134th birth anniversary of the late President Sergio Osmena Sr. this coming September 9, 2012. The day, which falls on a Sunday, is a special non-working holiday in the province of Cebu and its component cities by virtue of Republic Act (RA) 6953. The day meanwhile is a special working holiday in the rest of the country. RA 6953 was signed into law by then-President Corazon Aquino in May 1990. Click here to read the full text of RA 6953.

Born in 1878 (three weeks after Manuel Quezon), Osmena is one of only two Visayans to ascend to the presidency – the other one being Carlos P. Garcia. Prior to serving as Philippine president from 1944 to 1946, the Osmena patriarch used to be a provincial governor, House speaker, senator, and vice president. Osmena’s 45-year political career came ended when he was defeated by then-Senate President Manuel Roxas in the 1946 presidential elections.

Since then, several members of the Osmena clan have occupied positions in the national and local level. Serging Osmena unsuccessfully ran against then-President Ferdinand Marcos in 1969 while Lito Osmena failed in his vice presidential and presidential bids in 1992 and 1998, respectively. At present, Sergio Osmena III is serving his third non-consecutive term in the Senate while his brother Tomas is in his first term as a Cebu congressman (he served as Cebu City mayor for 16 years).

  1. sana this will be moved to september 1o…our good congressman osmena (tommy) and senador osmena (serge) should make the necessary representation…

  2. This issue about the applicability of the holiday being a Sunday, on the next working day if only to savor the essence of declaring it a special non working holiday.
