Timeline for all Facebook pages starting March 30, 2012

Facebook announced this February 29 that “all pages” on this site will get the new design (the Timeline) beginning on March 30, 2012. In line with this, page administrators are encouraged to preview immediately how their respective accounts would look like on the new layout and for them to try out the other features. This comes five weeks after the popular website announced that “everyone will get timeline…over the next few weeks.”

All Facebook pages will get the timeline by March 30, 2012 (click to enlarge)

The new feature was made available to users last December 15. According to post by Facebook’s Paul McDonald, the timeline gives users an “easy way” to rediscover the things they shared as well as their life’s most important moments. One of the key features of the timeline is the activity log, where users can review all the items they posted from the day they started using the said social networking site.

Users will have seven days after clicking “get Timeline” to preview what they want to appear on their profile page. The Internet giant has published a step-by-step guide for users in customizing their privacy settings. This is apparently to allay fears that the new page layout is a means for Facebook to sell more user information to its advertisers. As Financial Times reported in early February, “Facebook is offering to marketers an opportunity to pay to feature these automatic posts more prominently to a user’s friends, in their news feeds, and in the right-hand column of the page that is generally reserved for advertising.”

About these ads

Facebook asks me: “No girlfriend yet?”

Before anything else, I’d like to greet you all a Happy Valentine’s Day in advance. Since that day falls on a Tuesday, I’m sure many couples out there would celebrate it this coming weekend. What about for those uncommitted? Do they have to wallow in despair because of solitude? No. Facebook has a solution for that!

The other night, while Facebooking in Mozilla Firefox, I saw this cute advertisement in the upper right corner of my Timeline. It says: “No girlfriend yet? Get serious about a relationship and sign-up for free at FlirtMax.PH. Plenty of girls from Manila are already there.” I’d like to note that I didn’t see this ad when I used Google Chrome.

As Valentine's day comes, Facebook asks me: “No girlfriend yet?” (click image to enlarge)

The first question that entered my mind is, “How did THEY know I’m single?” Oh yes. I recently set my relationship status to “single.” So probably, Facebook “shared” that information to their advertisers. As Financial Times reported yesterday, “Facebook is offering to marketers an opportunity to pay to feature these automatic posts more prominently to a user’s friends, in their news feeds, and in the right-hand column of the page that is generally reserved for advertising.”

Since it’s the season of love, I’ll give Facebook the benefit of the doubt. I won’t see the presence of that cute ad in my profile page as an attempt by the social network site to infringe on my privacy. Maybe, FB sincerely wants me to be in a relationship soon. Thanks, but no thanks. Obviously, not everyone needs somebody to love, at least for now (apologies to Justin Bieber). :-)

Britney Spears to her Filipino fans: Maligayang Pasko!

Pop icon Britney Spears surprised her fans in the Philippines last when she wrote “Maligayang Pasko!” in her Facebook fan page early morning of December 26 (or 25 in the United States). The account has nearly 16,000,000 “likes” so far. The said post has received 8,858 “likes” and 2,135 comments as of this writing. Aside from English and Filipino, the Till The World Ends singer did not write a Christmas greeting in any other language.

Below are some of the comments:

Thank you for greeting us Filipinos, pop princess Ms. Britney Spears!” – user Justin Xiu

Nakakataba ng puso dahil sa dinami.dami ng pwede niyang batiin dito sa mundo tayo pang napili niya. Special yata tayong mga Pinoy ke Brit!” – user Miriam Gamboa

That ‘Maligayang Pasko’ means a lot to us. :) ” – user Lovely Condrado

I love your music. Hope you come here in the PHILIPPINES soon:) )” – user Almar Segovia Dela Cruz

Britney Spears caused a stir among Filipino netizens in 2007 when she wrote in her song “Piece of Me” that she wants to “sneak away to the Philippines” to avoid American tabloid journalists. Last year, disk jockey Andi Manzano tweeted that Britney Spears would be coming to Manila for her Femme Fatale Tour – a claim that later on proved to be false.

[Guest Post] “Just for the Memory” by John Matthew Villapol

I have not met personally Mr. John Matthew (a Chris Brown look-alike!), next guest blogger. An agriculture student from UP Los Banos, he’s one of my more ardent readers. He is good in writing literary pieces – poems and short stories – stuffs that are not my cup of tea (I am the essay and feature article guy).

I met him through the Facebook group of Anti-Pinoy (the place to go if you want your views to be challenged). One of his goals is to compile his write-ups and have them published. In a way, one of my aims in writing online is to meet, albeit virtually, more people like him, that is, readers who unhesitatingly share their views on what I write.  So everyone, here’s his piece:

A friend once asked my sister how she would describe her bother. She wrote:

“He’s just another college student who wishes a better life and tries to work for it. There isn’t much of a difference between him and most people, but with the fact that each person is unique, it makes one wonder if he is more unique than the others. Working for a better future, dreaming of it, and wishing that someday he would achieve it, just like any other dream that comes across his mind, he writes. I can’t describe much about him because if I did that, one would only think of him as cliché.

No matter how unique, or unlikely, and strange his works, his thoughts, and opinions would be, no one would understand how original he is until you meet him, because he may seem like everyone else. He is actually a very talented artist, and like every talented artist, he is brilliant in his own way. I take a quote from him every now and then and one quote in particular that has always meant so much to me and every writer out there: ‘I just want to write.’ “

I have no particular idea how she was able to say this but nevertheless, I am glad that she thinks of me as such. Currently, I’m taking up BS Agriculture in UPLB (University of The Philippines: Los Banos), although I would very much prefer to shift to AB Literature, or maybe AB Communication Arts, since my passion revolves around words and music.

My love for writing emerged during High School, where I first wrote a pseudo-script style story for a friend who actually enjoyed my works. I distinctly recall her paying me Php20 for every page I wrote, and it drove me to write quite a lot, ending up with around 60 pages worth of storyline, to which I agreed to end with an oration of the final parts for a final due of Php1200. So if you do the math, I actually earned a lot with it. I was rather surprised, although given the proper background of books, I believe that anyone can write well.

During Grade School, I’d read a lot of books. I also frequently browsed our library’s encyclopaedia section for any word on the wars of history as well as several mythology articles. I recall my particular love for a book of poems I’d found, although the title escapes my memory. Poetry, since then, has been my favourite writing technique. From Poetry Slam videos I see on YouTube, to rap battles, and works by literary greats such as Edgar Allan Poe (one of my favourite poets), I undoubtedly enjoy poetry.

Music is my second favorite medium for communication. Even with my acquired deafness (on the left ear), I still enjoy a lot of music: from both indie and mainstream artists, to even songs from early 1900s. With the combination of poetry and ambient sounds, be they electric guitars, or the simple beat of a drum, I usually find my inspiration with music.

Particular times of the day, such as sunrise, sunset, or very early in the morning (1am or so), with the right blend of music to fit the mood, help me write most of my works. An ironic twist on things that inspire me would be that I usually write when I’m depressed; which, as most people who read my works mention, are very dark, and have a general negative omnipresence. The influence of Edgar Allan Poe seems to resonate in my works, as mentioned by two former High School English teachers.

My blog though, relating the topic to my presence here, is basically where I post some of my works, although not my best ones, for others to read and enjoy. In terms of content, my blog is loaded with short stories, thoughts or journal entries, poems, and other mediums, such as several pictures I took during the time I enjoyed photography. I have grown a little tired of the latter, but absolutely not writing. I doubt I will ever grow tired of the medium, and I look forward to adding more to my collection of short stories, poems, and the like.

I have no particular idea yet as to what or where I will become or end up in the future. I simply hope that my writings will touch other people, evoke their emotions, and hopefully, be remembered even after my death. I dream that my works will be studied in High Schools, as if I were the 21st century version of Dante Alighieri or something of the sort. I believe that life is worthless if one does not make a particular mark on society, or at least impact it in a way that it would evoke change, or assist in the production of new ideas. To do that however, would require propagation, which I doubt I will be able to obtain, but I still nourish a slight hope for such. To sum it up; I exist just for the memory.

Yahoo Mail 2011 upgrade = a trap for users?

I created my first Yahoo account nearly seven years ago. There have been modifications to Yahoo Mail since then, most notably the integration of Yahoo Messenger into it in 2009. According to Wikipedia, there are currently two other versions of the Yahoo Mail other than the one launched as early as 1997. Those versions were released in 2007 and 2011, and for a long time, upgrading to a newer version of the Yahoo Mail is only an option – until recently.

Have you opened your Yahoo Mail recently? If you did, you probably got irked that Yahoo is literally coercing you to upgrade to the 2011 version. And users’ hands are tied as regards to this. In an effort to “encourage” all their users to upgrade to the 2011 release, you will see this upon accessing Yahoo Mail. Notice that I highlighted the word “trap” in the Yahoo Mail URL.

Yahoo Mail 2011 Upgrade - Notice the word "trap" in its URL. (click for higher resolution)

One cannot access his/her account without clicking the “Try in now” button. In other words, unless you upgrade to the latest version of Yahoo Mail, you will not be able to check your emails. Indeed, it is a TRAP – and the only way to revert back to the classic Yahoo Mail is by turning off your Internet browser’s JavaScript.

I know these services are given for free, and that is something everyone of us will always be thankful for. However, isn’t it better if these companies (including Facebook!) give their users an option to avail of the upgrade or not?

Time for some self-gratification (Hey, it’s not about THAT!)

Sorry for the double-meaning title. :D

Yesterday, this blog has reached 5000 views, a significant milestone for me. I know this figure pales in comparison to the page views popular sites out there gets. Some of them can easily get 5000 views in a matter of weeks, or even days, but that’s not the point. Right now, I feel like a parent who enjoys seeing his child’s first baby steps. We all know that babies are not able to walk far distances without tripping, but later on, with constant practice (and much prodding from his/her parents), they can already run around the house!

5000 views - not bad for a new blog, right? :D

My page views are wildly inconsistent for now; it’s been only of late that it got 100+ views for several days straight. Plus, only a handful of my readers have posted their comments. Nevertheless, I do not get disheartened. As others have told me, I just have to be patient. In fact, I am making it a point to regularly post here new content as soon as time permits. I really appreciate those who’ve complemented my writing style and topics discussed here. I can’t help but be flattered when people tell me they’ve subscribed to my posts or have bookmarked my site.

For letting me promote my blog on their pages, my heartfelt thanks to:

No, Chris. There’s a flood warning sign before you reach Mother Ignacia Ave.

It was like a scene straight from MTV Boiling Points (remember that show?).

UP Law student and philosophy summa cum laude graduate Christopher Lao have become an overnight Internet celebrity for all the wrong reasons. He was interviewed by GMA 7’s Jun Veneracion because his car was rendered useless by last Tuesday’s flashfloods (triggered by storm Kabayan). He babbled and ranted on national television that he was not at all aware that Mother Ignacia Avenue in Quezon City was impassable that morning because “he was not informed.”

Mr. Lao has been described as “dumb” and a “moron” by throngs of people online for his remarks (he even has two hate pages in Facebook). He became a trending topic in Twitter and Yahoo. Literally everyone has written about him, including The Professional Heckler (http://professionalheckler.wordpress.com/2011/08/07/fyi), New York Times reporter Carlos Conde (http://asiancorrespondent.com/61702/christopher-lao-a-flood-of-online-insult/), and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (http://www.cmfr-phil.org/2011/08/05/on-the-christopher-lao-controversy/).

Come on, cut the guy some slack. Who among you have not blurted out downright stupid things when the going gets tough? I also don’t like the thought of dragging the name of UP (my alma mater) into this entire mess. Do you really have to emphasize “UP graduate pa man din” every time you criticize him for his actions? I really hate it whenever people do that.  It’s as if UP graduates are supposed to be perfect all the time (since their shortcomings are forever magnified).

I want to correct the misconception that there were no warning signs in the area. My office is near Mother Ignacia and there is not a day I don’t see this huge sign in the intersection of Panay Avenue (which comes before Ignacia, if you’re coming from UP) and EDSA:

A huge flood warning sign for motorists approaching Mother Ignacia Avenue in Quezon City. (pls repost with credits)

Given the strength of the rains that morning plus the fact that he is rushing home for his daughter (according to a Facebook note by his UP classmate Rowena Ricalde), it is understandable for him not to have read the sign when he was approaching Mother Ignacia. I’m not about to speak for him on that. But, at least, the whole world now knows what MMDA has been warning us about: “Tuwing umuulan, bumabaha sa Mother Ignacia Ave.” You’re better off taking Panay Avenue instead.

Motorists can use Panay Avenue as an alternative to the flood-prone Mother Ignacia Ave. in Quezon City. (personal photo)

Yesterday, I posted Jun Veneracion’s reaction to criticisms about his interview with Christopher Lao:  http://rightonthemark.wordpress.com/2011/08/06/gma-7s-jun-veneracion-reacts-to-criticisms-about-his-interview-with-christopher-lao/

GMA 7′s Jun Veneracion reacts to criticisms about his interview with Christopher Lao

Mr. Veneracion is apparently reacting to criticisms that he unwittingly made UP Law student Christopher Lao look stupid on camera during his interview with him last August 2. That was when Mr. Lao’s car was rendered useless by last Tuesday’s flashfloods (triggered by storm Kabayan). Chris Lao ranted on national television that he was not at all aware that Mother Ignacia Avenue in Quezon City was impassable that morning because “he was not informed.” Mr. Lao has been described as “dumb” and a “moron” by throngs of people online for his remarks. He even has hate pages in Facebook.

In loving memory of my Friendster account

Somewhere in the profile page of my Friendster (or simply FS) account, you’ll read the phrase “member since July 2004.” Yes, I’ve been a Friendster user for almost seven years now. I created the account when I was just in junior high school; now, I’m already taking my Masters! At that time, most of my classmates are in that social networking site (SNS). You are not “in” if you’re not in Friendster. FS also became a bridge between me and former elementary batch mates, most of whom I haven’t seen since we graduated in 2002.

Early FS users strived to reach the 500-friend limit. Persons who barely spoke to each other became “friends” while one can always hear people saying to each other “you owe me a testi!” Eventually, the 500-friend limit was stretched to 5000 while testimonials were later relabeled as “comments.” I remember how I blasted, at one point, my contacts who do not “give back” comments. Instead of studying Chemistry or doing my project in Advanced Biology, I spent more time after class surfing Friendster. There’s this gratification obtained from being able to browse other people’s pages, right? Just imagine how thrilled I was whenever a crush accepts my friend request (and in any of my online accounts, actually). Indeed, Friendster was an effective stalking tool!

                                Friendster logo (2009-present)

Well, that was years ago. After dominating the Philippine social media scene for such a long time, Friendster had slipped into obsolescence. Many users have either neglected (this writer included) or deleted altogether their FS account. Isn’t it that just a few years ago, going online means opening one’s FS page? Some even go as far as denying that they’ve ever used that site. It has become that unfashionable! Amazingly, I know some people who succumbed to the Facebook bandwagon after years of bucking peer pressure for them to join Friendster.

Early last month, not-so-unexpected news came: Friendster will be doing away with its social network service to transform itself into an all-music site (similar to MySpace). All user page content except one’s profile (except the comments) and friend’s list will be deleted by May 31, 2011. In line with this, Friendster users have been advised to export their files to other websites like BlogSpot and WordPress for blogs and Multiply and Flickr for photos through a certain application. User profiles and testimonials can also be converted to zip files. As I’m writing this, all my Friendster photos are already in Multiply while I have saved a WinRAR Zip file of my entire account.

Alexa Web Rankings says the Friendster is now just the 15th most visited site in the country (as of May 2011). FS is still more popular than sites like Jobstreet and JobsDB, but it’s nothing compared to FB. When I made a report for my online journalism class last December 2008, FS was still the 2nd most popular site in the country. Facebook is now the most visited site here – getting more hits than search engines Google and Yahoo.

What does the meteoric rise and eventual extinction of Friendter usage mean? People are constantly looking for new things and that they can easily be swayed by a perceived bandwagon. If Facebook will follow Friendster’s trajectory, I dare say that in a few years, it will fade away, too. My FS account will never be as active as before, but I don’t see any reason to delete it. I am waiting for the “new” Friendster. Who knows, it might be able to recover some of its lost glory!
