San Mig Coffee dethrones Alaska Aces, advances to semis vs Air 21
Revenge completed.
The San Mig Coffee Super Mixers defeated Alaska Aces, 79-65, in the third and final game of their quarterfinals series Saturday night. The Mixers will advance to the semifinals.
The win kept the Mixers’ hope for a third straight conference championship alive while ending the Aces’ bid for back-to-back PBA Commissioner’s Cup titles.
Veteran player Peter June Simon led the Mixers with 21 points and five rebounds. He is 9/14 from the field. This is the Mixers’ seventh consecutive semifinals appearance.
Interestingly, the Mixers won the Commissioner’s Cup title in 2012 Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters. They lost the crown the following year after getting outclassed by the Aces during the semifinals. Alaska won the championship by sweeping Brgy. Ginebra Gin Kings in the finals, 3-0.
Another story line in this series is that Mixers head coach Tim Cone led the Aces franchise for over two decades. Luigi Trillo, the current Aces head coach, used to be one of his assistants.
The Mixers will play Air 21 Express in the semifinals. The Express defeated the powerhouse San Miguel Beermen in double overtime Friday night to advance to the next round. The series begins on April 29.
