Eid’l Fitr 2013 Philippine Holiday

August 9 2013 Philippine holiday

UPDATE: President Benigno Aquino III has declared August 9, Friday, a special non-working holiday throughout the country. This is in observance of Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims worldwide. Aquino made the announcement through Proclamation 629, which you can read here.

The Philippines will have three national holidays for August 2013. They are the following:

August 9, 2013 – Eid’l Fitr or the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan for Muslims

August 21, 2013 – Ninoy Aquino Day

August 26, 2013 – National Heroes Day

According to the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), the end of Ramadhan Fasting and observance of Eid’l Fitr will only be determined after the moon-sighting activity that will be done on August 6, Tuesday. The fasting month of Ramadan officially begun last July 9.

Muslims determine the date for Eid’l Fitr by closely monitoring the different phases of the moon. The NCMF, formerly the Office of Muslim Affairs, has also released the schedule for fasting and praying for Muslims in Metro Manila. It can be accessed in this link.

Eid’l Fitr became a national holiday in the Philippines through Republic Act (RA) 9177, which then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed in May 2002. The said law mandates the NCMF to determine the approximate date for the said holidays “in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient.” Read the full text of RA 9177 here.

RA 9177 was used as one of the references in crafting Proclamation 459, which listed all the national holidays for 2013. Click this link for a related blog post.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is magnificent blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.|
